Quartetting-Is It for You?

The essence of barbershop harmony is four voices, each singing a separate part. The result is harmonic synergy, the marriage of the physics of sound with magic.

When you’re ready – which we sometimes define as “10 minutes or so after walking through the door” – you’re going to sing your part by yourself in harmony with just three other guys. Don’t worry, it’ll just be a snippet of something we will teach you.

After that, your life may change forever.

If you really get serious about it, you might want to find three other guys and organize a regular quartet. The chorus and the musical leadership will provide as much support as you need.

Quartets that have sprung from the chapter include:

Fuze is an emerging a capella, modern barbershop quartet from right here in Asheville. While they sing a mix of different styles, their specialty is still classic and modern barbershop.

They are comprised of local professionals who have formed this group simply for the love of harmony. The lead is Trevor Way, an events staffing coordinator. The tenor is Matthew Boutwell, a business manager and semi-professional opera singer with the Asheville Lyric Opera. The baritone Jeremy Scroggs, a finance counselor at UNCA, also happens to have his masters in church music and is the music minister for a church in Candler, NC. And Colby Beck, the bass, is an accountant with a local senior living facility.

In addition to local performances and charity events for the Asheville Lyric Opera and Asheville Community Theater, they will also be competing in regional barbershop quartet competitions. For more information, or to book Fuze for your next event, please contact them at fuzequartet@gmail.com.
