Section Leaders

Tenors - Mike Morey

Mike Morey is our tenor section leader as well as all-around prop fabricator. His musical background stretches back to high school days when he played cornet in the band – yes, Mike was the original band geek. He also has played guitar in several bluegrass and country bands through the years.

In addition to being tenor section leader, Mike is currently trying his hand at some choral directing. He has been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society for 11 years and Land of the Sky Chorus for 5 years, having previously sung with Rochester Hill, MI and Detroit-Oakland Choruses.

Mike’s happiest memory of the chorus is performing at the Dianna Wortham theatre as well as our 5th place finish at District Contest Spring in 2009.

Mike is a retired firefighter and entrepreneur. He had a sign business before retiring to Maggie Valley 5 years ago with his wife Diana. They have three children and three grandchildren. Of course retirement is too boring, so Mike is working part-time at Ghost Town in the Sky, making signs of course! Mike enjoys golf, fly fishing and ballroom dancing.

Leads - Kevin Kehres

Never one to walk away from a challenge, Kevin came to Asheville with almost 30 years experience as a baritone, and almost immediately was turned into a lead, and then was 'volunteered' to become lead section leader. He has been trying without success to give this job away to someone more worthy for the past three years.

Baritones - James McMahon

James is the baritone section leader, and doubles as a bamboo pole when the need arises (he's tall and skinny).  He also directs some of our repertoire.  James got his fist taste of barbershop at age 12, and the style has been in his bones ever since.

James directed his college a cappella group, and studied choral conducting at Harvard and at the New England Conservatory of Music.  His happiest barbershop memory is perpetually last Tuesday night's rehearsal.  He lives in Asheville with his wife and 4 kids.

Basses - Fred Maney

Fred Maney serves as the Bass section leader, and unofficial YouTube conduit for the chorus.

He was a long-time barbershop fan, but Fred only joined the Land of the Sky Chorus in 2007. Fred says his happiest barbershop moment was the first Land of the Sky rehearsal he attended. He has not stopped grinning since.

Fred has lived in Fletcher for last 25 years with his wife, Kathy. They have raised two daughters, Karen and Alyssa, who were members the 2002 Sweet Adelines Rising Star Champion Quartet.
